OCHM316
Organic Chemistry II

Organic Chemistry II

Course Description

This course further elaborates functional groups with emphasis on alcohols, phenols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, amides, esters, amines, and carboxylic acids once the nature and reactivity of these functional groups are understood, important biological examples will be stressed and elaborated. Biochemistry, particularly the properties and metabolism of biological macromolecules such as nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins will be introduced.

This course is the first in a two part series covering a general study of life processes, emphasizing basic concepts of biology suitable as a general education elective for non-science majors.

Highly Recommended Prerequisite: Organic Chemistry I (OCHM311 and OCHM311L) or equivalent

Course Structure

Lectures

Classes begin with intensive lectures (up to five hours) led by experienced instructors. Through a mix of presentations and small-group discussions, students learn to tie key foundational concepts to clinical practice and other real-world applications. Interactive Online classes provide group-based virtual learning through Zoom. Classes happen in real time with required attendance during a set schedule. Self-Paced Online classes provide the chance to study at your own pace (as long as you meet certain assignment due dates) and meet individually or in small groups with instructors as needed via Zoom at times that work for the students (after an initial Zoom meeting, there are no required attendance times).

Labs

Lab courses provide hands-on experiences that complement the lectures. SCU students enjoy dedicated resources, including chemistry, microbiology, and anatomy labs.

Due to COVID-19 requirements all labs are being offered virtually. The Department of Education has asked all schools to take into consideration these emergency circumstances related to COVID-19 and online instruction. You may want to contact your transfer to institution to determine their policy about online versus on-campus labs, which may change due to the global pandemic.

Student Support

Tutoring in any subject is available to fit student schedules. SCU students can also take advantage of exclusive health sciences workshops and symposiums offered by the University.

This course is typically needed for:

  • Nursing Programs
  • Physical Therapy Programs
  • Pharmacy Programs
  • Occupational Therapy Programs
  • Medical Schools
  • Veterinary Programs
